Artist Statement

I believe media reinforces and creates our societies norms, values and beliefs. When the rich and powerful use the media to influence the overall agenda to reflect their agenda, this leads to corruption. Satire and documentaries are a great way to address this issue and expose the public to injustices.

I am inspired by satirical comedy shows like "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report” that clear through the clutter of media that tend to divide people with different viewpoints. Hopefully, my work can do something similar by creating truthful stories dedicated to facts rather than to politics.

I am also inspired by documentary films that examine social institutions and the effects they have on all our lives. One of my favorite documentaries is called "Miss Representation", in which addresses media portrayals of women. It opened my eyes to how media can affect the public viewpoint on certain topics, in a way so subtle that some would not realize it if they were not critically thinking about what they are watching. The film inspires me to someday put out media that showcases women in three-dimensional roles and leadership positions rather than the “damsel in distress” or the “eye candy” roles.

Hopefully as I progress in my media goals, I can create media that simultaneously entertains and informs the public.
